The Story of UDesignItYarns

“Why do you go away? So you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors.”--- Terry Pratchette A Hat Full of Sky

UDesignityarns is a culmination of dreams and imagination that started as a spark, and turned into a flame. Its roots go back some thirty odd years to a time spent in Finland working the looms of the community weaving houses there, then returning to the United States with a new dream; to make a weaving house here, where people could come and learn to weave.

“I am not the same seeing the moon on the other side of the world.” --- Mary Ann Radmacher

In time, the dream changed and evolved into a 10 year hobby, then a custom weaving service, and finally in 2004 into a carding and spinning mill where yarn could be created for weaving, as well as knitting and crochet. Perfecting the art of spinning quality luxury yarns became the primary focus of the custom mill, giving fiber producers an opportunity to sell yarns made from the fleece of their animals.

“Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere.” ---Carl Sagan

Contemplating the future of the business, and trying to imagine where it could grow brought divine intervention (as it always does when you are open to it) in the formation of an idea brought forth to two of us at the same time: We had fiber, why couldn’t we offer to the masses what up till then had only been offered to fiber animal producers? Individuals could pick their fibers, colors, and spinning options, design their own yarn, and we would create it for them.

“Some might think that the creativity, imagination, and flights of fancy that give my life meaning are insanity.”--- Vladimir Nabokov

From the beginning, the pursuit of UDesignItYarns was a leap of faith. Many people surely thought we were crazy, and at times we questioned our own sanity. The journey has been one of ups and downs, confidence and doubt, accomplishments and setbacks, but the dream kept calling us to fulfill it. We pulled together as a team and did what Theodore Roosevelt recommended: “Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell 'em, 'Certainly I can!' Then get busy and find out how to do it.” We did get busy, and we found out how to make the dream of UDesignItYarns into a reality!

“Some people see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say, why not?”---Robert F. Kennedy
